Infoplease.com is perhaps the largest reference site one the web. This site has
many sections like, Almanacs, Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Thesaurus, Atlas, etc.
Every effort is made to keep the information up to date. The site loads pretty fast.
The site does not look thoroughly professional and no chance has been left for
earning with ads on the pages, though it doesnt disturb navigation and use of the
site but at times you are compelled to scroll down too much.

The header has a search box to search the entire site or a particular section. Two
links on the header 'Sitemap' and 'FAQ' are not working. The menu bar on the top
and menu pad on the left are very handy to shift from one section to another. The
sections are very neatly arranged enabling easy access and search.

Every page displays links for related content on the site and some sponsored links. ( I just said
no chance was left to make money through ads ! ). Every page displays Tag
Cloud in a small box, Info please tools, Career Center and College Center. I was
pleased very much to find that The College Center box has links for searching for
free scholarships which will be helpful for poor students.

The site some games like sudoku, crossword etc for adults too.

The Information on the site is authentic, accurate and reliable : After all, this site is
owned by Pearson Education, which also owns big things like Financial Times
Group and Penguin Group.

The site has an encyclopedia too. Whatever information you need, you will
find it. The search works just like a commercial search engine. It displays the no.
of results, links to the content of the site for the search term. If you misspell a word,
it even suggests the right term. The site works in a professional way.
If you have school going kids, book mark it !

But remember, this site is no competition to Wikipedia.com. Wiki has extremely
vast information - that is due to contributors worldwide. Infoplease seems to be
not stretching boundless.

Though this site is not a giant like Wiki, yet, this site is clearly a winner.

The Best Freeware

Posted by blog4net | | 0 comments »

I am back ! But first let me apologise for not posting anything for so many days.
I have been very busy with a training program in my office. I was working literally
round the clock in my office and had to look after my pregnant wife too... Life is at
times too busy.

Lets continue with our web site discussion.

Now a days Open Source Projects are the hottest on the web. These Projects are
offering the users superior softwares and applications for free when compared to
the applications you can buy from software giants. Well, every one knows that
there are open source projects but where do you find them?

The answer is Bearbottoms1.com !

This is perhaps one of the best sites I found for Freeware Links. The site is simple to look at. Loads very fast. No graphics on the page. Naviation is nothing but scrolling down the page. The links are dividied into different sections like New Program Selections, Security, Education & Fun, Parental Control, Office, Anti Virus, File Management, Web Development, Audio & Video Applications, Graphic Editors like GIF Animators, System Utilities etc. Just name the kind of program and you have it on the page.. for FREE. No need to Pay or Buy. The Admin has marked the best programs with a 'paw' (paw of a bear). I was surprised to find so many best programs on the site. When you click on a link, it takes you to the home page or download page of the software. The sites are loading pretty fast. I clicked not less than ten links. The downloads are fast: of course they are not hosted at this site. I downloaded 3D Architecture software Sweet Home 3D. It was 23MB and came down to my desktop pretty fast.

This is a site that every body will love to bookmark and visit whenever they need a
software. I am sure you will find every kind of software for free here.

I give it a thumbs up ... a big thumbs up to this site. Coz this site places all the free
software links.

A dictionary explains the meaning only verbally and with examples. But at times you need diagrams to understand the words, their inflections, derivatives and its etymology in a more effective way. There are many online dictionaries that do the job in the traditional way. Visit Visuwords.com which explains words in a graphical manner and in a better way.

This site consists of only one page. The header has a search bar. Enter the word you want to look up or click 'Random' to see a randomly chosen word. It is displayed in neuranet model. This graphic is displayed below the header. The graphic is a flash animation. You can see the tree grow more and more depending upon the word and its inflections. Nouns are displayed in blue circle, verbs are displayed in green circle. Derivations are indicated with grey dotted line connecting the root word. Place your cursor on the circles to see the definition and at times, a sentence for example. The legend is given right below the graphical area. You can enlarge and decrease the graphical area with your scroll button on the mouse. You can pawn the graphic by clicking and holding the left mouse button whichever way you want. See my screenshot. When I searched for the word 'web' the graphic looked like this. You can enlarge the graphic to the full width of your screen.

The interface of the site is simple, coz you dont need many options except looking up the dictionary. The inflections cannot be understood easily based upon their coloured cicles, lines and dotted lines. You need to master the legend. But its not hard to memorize them. The colors are easy to remember.

The site uses Princeton University's WordNet, an opensource dictionary built by University students and language researchers.

The positive thing is that the site is free to use and its a good site for people who are not native english speakers.

I give it a big thumbs up to the site. :-)

A good speech can change your mind to achieve big things. It can renew your energy to fight life, fight for your country, it can even make you stick to your ideals. Many people need them when they are low in spirits or need more inspiration and force to boost their morale. Those great speeches need to be preserved.

American rhetoric is a website which has a large speech bank of American speeches of twentieth century. The opening page is pleasing with the blue background. You can see snippets of some sections available at the website like Online Speech Bank, Top 100 speeches etc. The Navigation Pad is on the left side. But the font size could be larger.

The website has a large database of speeches in its Speech Bank. The speeches are indexed in alphabetical order of the name of the orator. The Speech Bank page has a section devoted to Iraq War Speeches. It also features Recent additions and Special Events. All the speeches have an mp3 format for download and transcribed text. Video in Windows Media is also available for some speeches. The audio can be heard online too.

The Top 100 Speeches Section has links by Rank of speech, by Decade and by Women Orators. Many of the speeches are available for download in .pdf format also. But unfortunately, the navigation pad is not available on the Index page and the page of speech. You have to open it in a new window or press Back on the tool bar of the browser to continue navigation.

The website has a good collection of movie speeches, Figures in Sound - the speeches are good in sound to hear with alliteration, rhyme and rhythm, Christian Rhetorics, Rhetoric of 9-11. The site also has a section for Scholars which has links to web sites of communication associations and journals. It has a quiz for scholars too.

American Rhetoric is a useful website for listening and downloading some very great american speeches. The biggest flaw is the font size of the Navigation Pad. The font can be a little bigger. My eyes got strained to read the font. The site loading is a little slow, may be due to the template design and colors. Its a neat three column template.

As for usefulness of this website, I give it a thumbs up.

Google is the omni present search engine now a days. Every body 'googles' for whatever information one wants to search over the internet. But many people do not how to get their information exactly in just one or two searches. They play around with words and phrases and manage to get the information, unless they are somewhat experienced.

It is very necessary to know some techniques to search google to get exact results without wasting your time. For that, at least to some extent, it is necessary to know how our searches are interpreted by google how it returns results for our search terms. When you understand this, you will know how to search without using many words in the search box by using some operators or special characters.

If you search for "Child bicycle helmet", google finds the pages containing wordsthat are similar to child. Children, children's, bicycle, bicycles etc. This is called
Stemming technique by google which means stem or root of the word that can have multiple endings. If you want your search to be more accurate, use " + " before the search term.

Remember, google cannot search synonymous words. If your search term includes " child ", google will not return results for " kids ". If you want google to search synonyms also, use ' ~ ' [ tilde ] : ~children . Use * [asterisk] to match one or more words in a phrase. For example if you type [google * my life] in the search box, it finds pages containing a phrase that starts with 'google' followed by one or more words, forllowed by 'my life' and returns resutls like 'google changed my life', 'google runs my life'.

Such are the search techniques described at Googleguide.com. This website is a very good resource for those who want to know how to search effectively and narrowedly. This site very useful for novices as well as experts of google users. The site three sections : Novices, Experts and Teens.

This site not only teaches techniques but has some exercises for practice also. The site also tells you how to submit your site to google if you have one. There are suggestions to enhance the page rank of your website. Although the website was last updated long back, it is a very useful website for those who want to know how to use google to get best results. Interface of the website is very simple does not look like a commercial website. The pages load fast. Menu pad is always availabe and makes the navigation easy.

The website has concentrated more on Google Search. But I feel it had some sections about other services that Google offers like Googlepages, Google Print and Google Docs, if not at great length, a brief description would be sufficient.
